NEW LEADER CHOSEN

TASMANIAN MINISTRY ELECTION NEXT YEAR? (10 a.m.) HOBART, Dec. 17. The Tasmanian Labour caucus elected Mr. Edward Brooker as leader of the party when the Premier, Mr. R. Cosgrove, resigns. Mr. Cosgrove told the Cabinet that the Governor, Sir Hugh Binpey, had advised him to resign and he intends doing so. It is stated that before the leadership vote was taken, Dr. R. J. Turnbull walked out because all the Cabinet positions were not to be balloted. His withdrawal is significant as the party has a majority of only one in the House of Assembly. An election next year is considered probable, even in Labour circles. The Premier, Mr Cosgrove who will be indicted on a charge relating to an allegation that he received £5400 from four road transport operators in exchange for an assurance that Tasmanian road transport would not be nationalised, is believed to have told the caucus that he would resign after the indictment was filed
