EXCLUSION OF PRESS
TRADE CHARTER TALKS SUB-COMMITTEE DRAFTING (10 a.m.) HAVANA, Dec. 14. The world trade conference steering committee decided to exclude not only newspaper representatives but official reporters for the United Nations from meetings of sub-committees where nine-tenths of the work in drafting the charter for the proposed international trade organisation will be done. The sub-committees will issue communiques on progress, but only after approval by the chairman, Britain, New Zealand, Australia, Norway, • France, Switzerland and China supported the move. The United States and India opposed it. Mr. Walter Nash, New Zealand, cited what he called the success of the South Pacific trade conference where the general press was excluded. He said that sub-committee work must be largely compromises and matters could be accomplished faster if members did not have to consider the effect in print.
