MARKET SWAMPED
GISBORNE POTATOES Some of the other growing districts, Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu, Otaki and Levin, are digging their potatoes much earlier than usual with the result that the market is over-supplied, states the weekly report from Gisborne Markets, Ltd. Unless something is done immediately to regulate the supplies there seems little chance of early potatoes now available being sold on the markets. Growers have been asked not to dig in this district until such time as the matter has been given further consideration. All varieties of stone fruits have been coming to hand in exceptionally heavy quantities, with prices falling rapidly. Tomatoes from Auckland, Hastings and Nelson have been received in increasing quantities, prices easing lyAll vegetables are in heavy supply and have been hard to quit. The demand for new season’s onions has been quiet and they are not being sought after. Prices:—Sharp’s plums, 7/- to 14/case; gooseberries, l/-lb; hothouse tomatoes, 1/8 to l/101b.; cucumbers, 22/6 to 25/- case; cabbage, 4/- to 5/- sack, cauliflower, 8/- to 15/- sack; lettuce, 4/- to 7/6 case; carrots, 25/- cwt.; parsnips, ceiling; turnips, 1/- to 2/- doz.; beetroot, 1/- to 2/- doz.; rhubarb, 2/to 4/- doz,; marrows, 6/- doz.; French beans, 8d to 1/- lb.; potatoes, ceiling; green peas, 3d to 4d lb.; new season’s onions, 18/- to 29/- cwt.; raspberries, 1/9 chip: strawberries, 3/- chip; peaches 12/- to 17/- case; apricots, 20/- to 30/case.
