Encouragement to Blacksmiths

A Government subsidy to make wages in the blacksmiths’ trade esufficiently attractive to draw young men was urged at a meeting of the North Taranaki Federated Farmers’ executive in New Plymouth. It was agreed that the Blacksmiths’ Association draw up what is considered a suitable scale of wages, detailing what proportion should be subsidised, and Federated Farmers will support the case. It was stated that a serious shortage of blacksmiths exists.
