WATER RATIONING
DELIVERY VOLUME
EXCESSIVE DRAW-OFF
PRESSURE FALLS BADLY In view of the rapid increase in the peak consumption of water in the Gisborne Borough, the municipal authorities today notified that a rationing scheme would be enforced until further notice, covering the use of water for non-essential purposes.
“There is plenty of water at the headworks, but the pipe-line cannot deliver the volume which people are now trying to draw off through hoses and sprinklers, as well as for household and industrial purposes,” said Mr. G. M. Beaumont, borough engineer, discussing the position this morning. “Pressure in the supply system has fallen so low that at times people living on the higher levels in the reticulated area are unable to secure domestic supplies. In the circumstances there Is no alternative to rationing the volume which the pipe-line from Waingake will deliver.”
The fire-station pressure gauge has fallen to a dangerously low level during the past few days, it was stated in reply to inquiries made at the station. The outbreak of a fire of any dimensions at present would possibly be disastrous, particularly in any area where the auxiliary pumps could not be used effectively. ,
