MAHIA SCARE
NEARLY SANK AGAIN REFLOATING OPERATIONS SHIP HEAVILY DAMAGED MELBOURNE, Aug. 11. The Shaw. Savill and Albion Company’s freighter Mahia. yi which 10 men lost their lives on Thursday, caused another scare when she threatened to sink again after refloating. The vessel was sunk at her moorings at Victoria Docks to prevent her from capsizing after the explosions and fire in the cargo. Pumping out and refloating was commenced during the week-end but soon after this had been completed the vessel began to sink. The holes cut in the vessel’s side after the disaster on Thursday had not been properly sealed and water poured into the burned out holds. Divers immediately plugged the holes and welded iron plates over them.
The vessel is now riding on an even keel, slightly down at the stern. She will be moved to dry dock, but damage to the keel, deck, refrigeration system and surface gear will probably take six months to repair.
