ST. HELENA WELCOME

ROYAL FAMILY'S VISIT (9 a.m.) LONDON. April 29. Half a dozen of St. Helena’s 50 European inhabitants who rowed out to H.M'.S. Vanguard were the first to greet the Royal Family, says Reuter's correspondent. The members of the party in a small boat stood up and cheered as the Royal Family crossed in a barge from the Vanguard to the cruiser Nigeria. The Governor of St. Helena, LieutColonel F. W. Gilpin, welcomed the Royal Family ashore and took them over mountain roads to Longwood, where Napoleon lived and died. The islanders presented the Queen with a collection of lace mats, cloths and wood work made by St. Helena craftsmen. The Royal Family before leaving watched boys making the longest bannister slide in the world down 629 steps from the top of Signal Hill. The whole population of less than 5000 lined the quay as Their Majesties left.
