SHARP EARTHQUAKE

WOMEN TRAPPED IN LIFT Preceded by a gentle swaying motion a sharp earthquake jolt was felt in most parts of Hawke's Bay at 11.12 o'clock on Tuesday morning. The earthquake lasted for several seconds and gradually subsided from its climax, leaving lamps swinging for some minutes afterward. Althougtrfhc tremor was not of sufficient intensity or duration to promote concern in business premises, it was severe enough at its height to cause temporary cessation of work in many places of business and set bells and clocks ringing. Two women spent a nerve-wracking five minutes in a lift in the Hawke's Bay Farmers’ building in Hastings, as the 'earthquake brought the lift to a standstill. While the earthquake lasted the lift oscillated in the shaft alarmingly, and its passengers were thoroughly frightened on their release shortly afterwards.
