EMPLOYERS’ CONSENT
INCREASE IN WAGES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 23. Commenting on the strike at the Whakatane paper mills, the chairman of directors, Mr. G. H. Mackley, M.P., stated yesterday he was at a loss to understand the reasons for it. Before the Easter break the employees had passed a resolution demanding an all-round increase of 3d an hour on the existing wage rates. They said no compromise would be acceptable, and if the demand, was not met they would work only a 40-hour fiveday week on resumption after Easter. This would have been a serious matter for the mills, as they normally worked three shifts over a 24-hour day, seven days a week. However, the employers had no objection to the wage increase and they informed the workers of the Act, but they were unable to put the increase into effect until it had passed through the hands of the Arbitration Court, which, it had recently been pointed out from the Bench, was the only legal method by which award rates could be altered.
