FORTY YEARS’ SERVICE
MR. WYKES RETIRES WATER WORKS EMPLOYEE The retirement of Mr. E. M. Wykes after 40 years’ service with the Gisborne Borough Council in charge of the Waingake water works, was the occasion tor an appropriate ceremony at las.t evening’s meeting of the council. The Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull, referred to Mr. Wykes’ faithful service for the past 40 years, and wished him well in his retirement. He also expressed pleasure that Mr. Wykes’ son was taking over the position held for so long by his father Messrs. H. H. DeCosta and M. J. White endorsed the Mayor's remarks. In reply, Mr. Wykes thanked the council for the consideration members had shown him. He had worked under 12 different engineers and 11 different Mayors, from the inception of the present pipe line. Mr. Wykes considered that the new water scheme now being carried out by the council would give Gisborne a water supply for many years to come. With a new pipe line the town should not have any water worries in the future.
