COUNCIL SUBSIDY
TRAINING OF PILOTS AERO CLUB SUPPORTED LEAD TO ORGANISATIONS “The council should give a lead and be prepared to subsidise by a certain sum the training of young potential pilots by the Gisborne Aero Club.’’ said the Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull, at last evening’s meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council. His Worship was speaking to a motion, which was approved, that the council should donate £SO out of unauthorised expenditure for subsidising the training of young residents of Gisborne who wished to learn to fly.
There were many young men in the town who wished to learn to fly, but the cost was prohibitive, said the Mayor. The Gisborne Aero Club had been started under difficulties and an honorary instructor was doing excellent work. Someone had to give a lead, and he thought it was advisable in this atomic age to encourage young men to become air-minded. He trusted that other organisations and firms in the district would follow the lead of the council, in subsidising training of young men who were unable to pay the full amount.
The subject, which was raised by the Mayor, was approved by other councillors, and the Gisborne Aero Club is to be advised that the subsidy will be available for those pupils recommended by the club.
