MORE URGENT NEED

EXISTING SCHOOLS KINDERGARTEN PROJECT The opinion .that primary and secondary school education should be provided for before any move in pre-school educational services was made, was expressed by the chairman of the Hawke’s Bay Education Board, Mr. G. A. Maddison, last week. The board was discussing a copy of a report of the consultative committee on pre-school education services which has been forwarded to the Minister of Education for his comment and recommendations.

Mr. Maddison said that the report recommended that a third of the cost of the upkeep of the schools be borne by the community, and he could not see that coming into operation at present. He considered that the matter of kindergarten education should be left in abeyance while so many amenities remained to be provided for the existing schools. There was a murmur of assent from members of the board.
