SPECIAL INSTRUMENTS INSTALLATION IN U.S. ADDED SAFETY FACTOR ( oisam) NEW YORK. Jan. 28. ” A system whereby an air transport Pilot could land through fog or overcast would be installed at 100 aerodromes this summer and 55 more in 1948, said, the Secretary of Commerce, Mr. Averin Harriman. The system, known as I.L.S. (instrument landing system), employs two electronic beams, one of which serves as a glide path on which a plane descends. It is already installed at aerodromes. . ’ Mr. Harriman said the air safety record greatly improved in 1946. He added: “Still, we have a long way to go before it compares favourably with the safety record of the railways and motor bus lines.”
