ACUTE SHORTAGE

BUILDING MATERIALS SOUTHLAND APPEAL (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Jan. 29. It was stated at a meeting of the Southland building industry council that because of the acute shortage of building and finishing materials 200 houses in Southland on which work had been begun was unlikely to be ready for occupation for some months. To avoid having to d ismiss large numbers of men, builders have continued to erect frames and are waiting for supplies of materials. One of the most serious problems is the shortage ■of plaster of Paris and men have been put off work in this industry. The building industry council decided to request Mr. J. R. Hanan, M.P. for Invercargill, to make representations in the endeavour to ensure that the quantities of plaster allocated to Southland are actually shipped. Speakers expressed the opinion that North Island manufacturers were receiving undue preference.
