CROSSING SAFETY ZONE “SILENT POLICEMEN” The poles installed in the centre of the pedestrian crossings in Gladstone road will be removed and replaced by traffic domes as an experiment, according to a decision made at last night's meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council, acting on the traffic inspector’s report. The poles on the pedestrian crossings were installed for the purpose of acting as a guide to the correct observance of the safety zones by vehicle drivers, stated the report of the borough traffic inspector, Mr. T. G. Nowell. When the poles had been removed it was found that in nearly every case drivers drove over the safety zone. Under the traffic regulations it was an offence for any person driving a motor vehicle to encroach on the area of the safety zone.
The inspector recommended that as an alternative to the poles the safety zone be indicated by placing two of the fiat type of silent policemen at present installed at various intersections at the extremities of the safetyzone
The works committee recommended that the inspector’s suggestion be given a trial at the crossing opposite the King’s Theatre and this recommendation was adopted by the council.
