WEALTHY REFUGEES
ARRIVALS AT SYDNEY VOYAGE FROM SHANGHAI (9 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 29. When the refugee ship Hwalien, formerly the Maori, arrived yesterday and anchored in Watson’s Bay a watchman was posted to keep visitors off the vessel. Customs and immigration officials, with the agent’s representatives, went aboard promptly,' but the work of checking papers was expected to take some hours. Friends and relatives were barred from the wharf. Australians aboard the ship said that some of the refugees had amounts up to £50,000 in their possession. Some have more than 10001 b. of baggage, which includes clothing, household equipment, furniture, pictures and kitchen utensils. There is one young Jewish stowaway who crept aboard at Shanghai and who may not be allowed to land.
