SUNKEN LINER
SALVAGE JPROSPECTS MAY BE TOWED TO BRITAIN PERMANENT REPAIRS (11 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 10. The liner Europa, which is now lying stranded on the mud in Le Havre, will have to be towed to Southampton for repairs, says the Evening News correspondent in Paris, quoting British salvage experts who examined the liner. One British expert believes it will be possible to patch the hole in the hull, pump the water out and tow the ship to Southampton early in the New Year. Refloating May Take Year It will probably take a year to refloat the Europa, which was scheduled to make her maiden voyage under the French flag in March 1947, said the Minister of Transport. M. Jules Modi. The ship is now back on an even keel resting on the bottom of Le Havre harbour. Her decks are about 50ft. above the waterline, but the enginerooms are flooded and extensively damaged. M. Moch said it was highly improbable that the sinking was due to sabotage. “Eight mooring cables snapped simultaneously when a tidal wave struck during a storm,” he said. “It is highly unlikely that anyone would be able to sabotage all eight cables so .that they snapped together.”
