LABOUR LEGISLATION

CONFIDENCE EXPRESSED LARGE BRANCH MEETING The annual meeting of the Gisborne branch of the New Zealand Labour Party took place at the Selvyn Hall last evening and was presided over by Mr. A. Thomas. There was a large attendance of members. An apology was received from Mr. C. F. Hansen for absence. A motion of condolence with the relatives of the late Hon F. E. Lark. M.L.C.. was carried. The president, Mr. Thomas, in giving his report, remarked that this was the first annual meeting held since peace was declared. The Government had performed a wonderful achievement in helping to win the war with the assistance and co-operation of the people of New Zealand and. with that same cooperation they would win the peace.

Gisborne was fortunate, he said, in having a visit from Mr. J. Roberts, national president of the New Zealand Labour Party, who addressed the public at a packed meeting on the Bank of New Zealand Bill. New Members Accepted

Forty-three new members were accepted. Two major events took place during the year, the inauguration of the Gisborne League of Youth branch of the New Zealand Labour Party, and the launching of the Labour Daily, The Southern Cross.

.Mr. Thomas thanked the secretarytreasurer, Mr. G. A Herkt. the members of his committee, the members of the branch, the auditors. Messrs P. Mann and F. Winter, and the press correspondent, Mrs. K. Tucker, for their cooperation during the year. At the conclusion of the president’s address, Mr D. W, Coleman, M.P., endorsed the remarks of Mr Thomas and said that he also was pleased with the formation of a youth branch, the members of which, he said, were very intelligent. energetic and enthusiastic The election of officers resulted: President, Mr. A. Thomas; vicepresident, Mr. E. R. Hudson; secretarytreasurer, Mr G. A. Herkt; executive, Mesdames E. R. Scott, J. Wise. Messrs. C. Mills, G. D. Muirhead, and J. H. Hall; delegates to L.R.C., Messrs. C. Mills, E. R. Hudson, and G. A. Herkt; auditors, Messrs. P. Mann and F. Winter; press correspondent, Mrs. K. Tucker.

The monthly meeting followed the annual meeting. A letter was received from Mi-. M. Moohan, national secretary of the New Zealand Labour Party, regarding the annual conference of the party, which will take place in June.

Members decided to held a dance in the Garrison Hall on May 1. A social committee was set up consisting of Mesdames J. Wise. E. Scragg, D W. Coleman, J. Mohan, K. Tucker, Miss D. Tucker, Messrs. R . Keeling, S. Hughes. F. Williams, E. Tucker, .T. Mohan, D. Moran, and A. Williams.

Four new members were nominated and accepted. Mr. R. A. Keeling agreed to address members at the next monthly meeting. His subject will be “Child Welfare in New Zealand.’’
