VANDALS' WORK?
WAIKANAE BASIN FIRE ON A LIGHTER WAR ON TRESPASSERS A suggestion that all trespassers caught on the board’s property in the Waikanae Basin should be prosecuted was brought forward by Mr. I. J. Quigley at yesterday’s meeting of the Appellate Court yesterday. He mentioned that during the weekend what appeared to be a deliberate attempt to set fire to a lighter tied alongside the wharf had occurred. A pile of old rope had been found smouldering and if it had not been discovered in time the consequences would have been serious. Mr. A. J. Nicol mentioned that a barrier had been erected on the diversion wall to keep trespassers out, but they still climbed this or swam across the channel from Waikanae Beach. Much valuable equipment was stored there and some of this had already suffered at the handls of vandals. The matter was left for the secretary to deal with.
