AUGUST FESTIVAL

COMPETITION DATES BIG SUCCESS IN 1945 ANNUAL MEETING HELD The annual festival of the Gisborne Competitions Society will be held in the week beginning August 23, and will conclude on August 31.. The arrangement, on which ihe committee has been working in advance preparations for the festival, was confirmed at the annual meeting of the society, held on Thursday evening. Mr.’W. H. Scott presided at the meeting which was well attended. A vote of condolence with Mr. A. Sheen and family, in respect of the recent death of Mrs. Sheen, was carried. Satisfactory Year The 29th annual report and balance sheet were submitted bv Mr. C. Blackburn, secretary, and was commented on with satisfaction 1 by the president. The festival held last year was an outstanding success, it was stated, the door takings and members’ subscriptions reaching a level which was not likely to be exceeded by any considerable amount in the future, since the society had capacity houses for the festival. Bigger entries and the sale of programmes assisted in showing an increase of £155 in revenue, but expenses increased by £152. The larger number of entries obliged the society to rent an extra hall for some of the classes, and the report complimented the stage manager on the manner in which difficult conditions were met. The 1946 festival would provide more time for dealing with all sections, and it was trusted that entries would justify the extension of the schedule. The support extended by ihe public to all sessions of last year’s fixture was acknowledged with thanks by the committee, which also expressed appreciation of assistance from various quarters. „ Election of Officers
