TAXIS TO STATION
NO BOROUGH CONTROL MAYOR’S EXPLANATION Recent correspondence appearing in the Herald, in connection with the service provided by Gisborne taxi proprietors for incoming railway passengers, was referred to by the Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull, to-day. Many people seemed to believe that the service provided for the travelling public was under the control of the Gisborne Borough Council, said Mr Bull. That was not the case. He had asked for a report upon the matter from the traffic officer of the council, who had reported- as under:— “The position is that taxi-cabs are licensed by the Transport Department through its licensing authority, and fares'are fixed by the authority from time to time. , ~ “In all, 16 taxis are licensed by the Railway Department to operate from the railway station in Gisborne. “Control of taxi operation, as distinct from licensing, was vested in the taxicab control committee during the war, and is now seconded to the Taxi Proprietors’ Association, Gisborne. Any complaints regarding the service should be addressed to the association, or to the No. 2 Licensing Authority, Wellington.”
