MAORI QUESTIONS
GRIEVANCES UNSETTLED Maoris in the Taupo district who thought they were going to have a discussion with the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, recently on various claims and grievances they had placed before him a year, ago were disappointed when they simply received a political speech from Mr. Fraser. The speech was mainly a political speech to secure backing tor Mr. Ratana, the Labour candidate at the by-election, as it was composed mainly of a list of the good things that the Government had done and was going to do for the Maoris and the wrongs that previous Governments had done them. After the meeting the ciders were very emphatic in expressing their disappointment in the whole meeting. They clearly understood that Mr. Fraser was’ coming to discuss, and probably settle, a number of the claims and grievances, they said. Instead of that they had to listen to nothing more Hum an election address. The Prime Minister . had made no effort during the visit to clear up any of the questions in dispute.
