CABLE SERVICE

EUROPEAN LINKS Cable communication with France, Southern Italy and, to a lesser extent, Belgium, has now been reopened and the route for cable traffic from New Zealand is now the same for these j countries as it was before the war, according to a statement made in Auckland by the manager in New Zealand of Cable and Wireless, Ltd., Mr. C. T. Halsted. Of five'cables in the Mediterranean which were cut when Italy entered the war, the majority are now working. Since the landing in North Africa. “Telcom” mobile radio units have been used by the cable company to obviate delay in the sending of press telegrams from war correspondents. These units are manned by men and women operators and are moved as close as possible to the combat areas. They establish communication either direct to London or to the nearest cable head, and delay in getting messages previously taken by mechanical transport to the cable or radio stations is thus obviated.
