DELAYS EXPLAINED CHAMBER OF COMMERCE The new method adopted by the Gisborne Chamber of Ccmfiidrce of holding its monthly meetings ini the evening instead of the afternoon as previously appears to meet with;.the approval of the members as. at Wednesday night's meeting thdre was a good attendance of over 30 members. Trie chairman, Mr W. E. Mt.llwaine, extended a welcome on behalf of the chamber to the recently arrived, new chief postmaster, Mr C. A. Condie, to new members attending for the first time and to the visiting .inspector of the Bank of New Zealand, Mr J. C, Morrison. Three new members, Messrs C. Aickeii dnd Son. LLnitfed,. A. Jamison and F. H. Forge, Were elected. The long time taken by secondclass mail to reach Gisborne was mentioned by several members, but after hearing the explanations of the chief postmaster, Mr C. A. Cdridie, and the stationmaster, Mr T. Martin, it was decided to take no immediate action as it was realised that both the postal and railway departments were at present -Working under considerable difficulties.

The comments of the secretary, Mr M. J. White,- on a brochure from the Wellirtgtbri Chamber of Commerce entitled “A Call to Free Enterprise” was endorsed by the meeting. Appreciative reference was made to the instructive and comprehensive nature of the letter. Use of Order Cheques The chamber endorsed thie , request of the Associated Banks in asking the business community to substitute bearer cheques, crossed “Not . Negotiable’’ between parallel lines; for order cheques. Mr P. Fischbach brought to. the notice of the chamber of the lack of young people coming forward from the secondary schools for the skilled trades. In reply, Mr L. T. Burnard outlined what the Gisborne High School was doing at present' and indicated that in due course thdre, should be a more plentiful supply of juvenile skilled labour coming forward from the school. Concerning rehabilitation, Mr H:,H. Barker suggested' that the chamber should take every step possible to remove all obstacles retarding the rehabilitation of returned servicemen into farms and businesses. The nomination of Mr I. J. Quigley For appointment to the rehabilitation committee was confirmed. • A discussion on the desirability of a municipal centre in Gisldorrie. concluded the meeting, it being realised that nothing along these lines was possible during wartime, blit . the chamber would keep the matter in view.
