MAORI BATTALION

VOLUNTEERS CALLED 39 FROM TAIRAWHITI AMPLE RESERVES HELD From the substantial list of volunteers for service with the Maori Battalion overseas, a further 39 have been selected from, the Tairawhiti district, and they will comprise a draft to proceed to camp shortly. _ It is the proud boast of, the Tairawhiti district that it has furnished a greater proportion of men for- the battalion than most other districts, and that its reserve of volunteers is still unexhausted. Many rrieri who have offered their services haVe been reserved without reference to their own wishes, owing to their classification as shearers arid other types-, pf essential seasonal workers, and the new draft, now being got together will not include any of these men. A majority are young Maoris who have come of. service age since ( the outbreak of the war.
