£SO FINE IMPOSED
PRICE BREACH ALLEGED £3 FOR BOTTLE OF WHISKY (P.A.) AUCKLAND. July 17. As a sequel to a previous prosecution for a breach of the Licensing Act, the firm of A. Corban and Sons, Ltd., was charged in the Police Court yesterday with a breach of the price stabilisation emergency regulations and pleaded guilty. Another charge, that the firm sold a bottle of whisky at a price which was unreasonably high, was withdrawn. Mr. S. Cleal, who prosecuted for the tribunal, said that on February 22 a woman constable purchased a bottle of whisky for which she was charged £3. The authorised price was £l, so that the profit was 400 per cent. Mr. Cleal said that as the firm had already been lined £SO as a result of the licensing breadh and its wholesale license suspended for six months, the tribunal had withdrawn the major charge. For the defendants, Mr. Prendcrgast said that the firm had been trading for many years and enjoyed a good reputation.
The magistrate, Mr. J. H. Luxford, said that the offence amounted to a breach of trust by people who held a license to sell liquor in a legal way, and was aggravated By the high charge made for a bottle of whisky. A tine of £SO was imposed.
