NOT TO STRIKE
BRITISH RAILWAYMEN DECISION OF EXECUTIVE (11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Feb 3. The Locomotive Workers Union has announced that there will be no strike of locomotive workers next week. The executive revealed that the president and secretary had met Mr. Ernest Bevin, who considered it would be against the spirit and intentions of the conditions of employment and national arbitration order if he regarded as a trade dispute a wage claim concerning which an independent arbitration tribunal had already given a decision.
The executive of the Locomotive Workers’ Union last month notified the Minister of Labour, Mr Ernest Bevin, that a dispute existed within the industry and requested that steps be taken under the employment and national arbitration order to give directions therewith, and stating that unless the Minister intervened within 24 hours a strike would be called. The dispute resulted from the locomotivemen’s dissatisfaction that the recent general award of an extra 5s weekly to railwaymen should include the 4s weekly increase previously granted to the locomotivemen. About 65,000 locomotivemen employed on all the mam lines are involved.
