NORWEGIAN CLERGY

DEFIANCE OF NAZI REGIME

(9 a.m.) STOCKHOLM, Aug. 15. The Norwegian clergy’s defiance has forced Quisling’s Church Department to mark time. The department announces that it does not propose to enthrone more bishops. This follows the clergy’s reaction when two Quisling bishops replaced dethroned anti-Quisling bishops. The department also announces that the police have been instructed to confiscate robes from dismissed clergymen, but adds that the police have been told not to arrest clergy offering resistance. The Times Stockholm correspondent says that the Church Department’s attitude is inspired by the hope that negdtiations with recalcitrant clergy will become possible at a favourabe moment.
