RAIDS ON ENGLAND

SMALL NAZI FORCES LITTLE DAMAGE DONE (11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 9. A few single enemy aircraft which flew over southern England and the home counties this afternoon dropped bombs at a small number of places. Shortly after midnight a small number of enemy aircraft were over areas in the east of England and the east Midlands, states the Air Ministry. Bombs have been reported from a few scattered points. One enemy bomber was destroyed and an enemy fighter was destroyed by anti-aircraft fire off the south-east coast of England. One raider dropped a stick of bombs on a town in the south of England, killing one person and injuring five. A raider over the coast of south-east England gunned a country district, and a raider in the north-east of England dropped a stick of bombs on a fishing village, directly hitting a Methodist church and a hall. Some persons were injured. The same raider gunned bowlers participating in a game in a neighbouring area, but there were no casualties. Spitfires chased away two Messerschmitts which shot down a barrage balloon in the Dover area. The entrance to a long-forgotten Crypt was discovered under the blitzed Strand church of St. Clement Danes. It extends over more than half the area of the church and contains interments made in the Middle Ages.
