SUCCESSFUL TESTS
PAPER PLASTIC PARTS PLANE CONSTRUCTION (9.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 9. A message from St. Louis says that the McConnell Aircraft Corporation announced that it has completed successful experiments using laminated paper plastic in the manufacture of wing tips, rudders, elevators, ailerons and other plane parts. In their fabrication, sheets of paper, like brown wrapping paper are impregnated with phenolformaldehyde and moulded under pressure. A wingtip made of this plastic is lighter and 40 per cent stronger than aluminium, withstanding 28001 b. weight in a test. The smooth surface eliminates the finishing and coating processes and has greater resistance to abrasion and denting than aluminium. It can be moulded with less pi’essure than other plastics, using cheaper zinc alloy dies instead of expensive steel dies.
