LEAVE TO HEAR GRANTED HOME GUARD SERVICE MEN RELEASD FROM CAMP Included in the appeals heard at yesterday's sitting of the Gisborne Armed Forces Appeal Board were two cases for review. Mr. F. R. Ball presided, with him being Messrs. J. E. Benson and C. E. Bickford. An appeal by Mrs. J. Brodie for the retention of R. Brodie, orchardist, was reviewed. Giving evidence, Mrs. Brodie said the position in the orchard at Patutahi had deteriorated since the last hearing, and if the reservist went into camp it would be impossible to earry on. One brother was a prisoner-of-war and . another was in camp. J. D. Candy, agricultural inspector, said that since the reservist had taken over the work of the orchard, he had increased the produ tion of fruit from 3000 to 11,000 cases. If another person was to take over the orchard, he might,do more harm than good. Leave to withdraw an appeal for D. McCormick, geologist, by the New Zealand Petroleum Company, was granted. The appeal of Amalgamated Transport, Limited, for L, W. Williamson, mechanic, was reviewed. Mr. D. E. Chrisp said in support that the next two months were vital ones to the ! company, as the mechanics had to recondition all the vehicles. If the overhaul was not done, the trucks would not see the coming season through. All the trucks were over five years old, the, best of them having been taken over by the army. Evidence was, submitted by W. Newcombe, manager of the company, and by V. G. Walker, chairman of the district man-power engineering committee.—The decision was reserved for one week.
