SOCKS FOR SOLDIERS

APPLICATIONS FOR WOOL Soldiers’ complaints concerning, the issue of socks are to be the subject of investigation by the Taranaki Provincial Patriotic Council, which has decided to authorise the issue of woollen comforts, such as balaclavas, scarves and mittens, to men on vital points duty. Reports were constantly being received, said the secretary, Mr. P. E. Stainton, that the Army issue of socks to men in camp in New Zealand was one pair of socks every six months, and that a soldier had to pay lid a pair for any more socks. He did not know whether that was correct, but there was considerable dissatisfaction, which would be reflected in patriotic contributions. Mr. Stainton said applications were continually being made by relatives of men in camp in New Zealand and serving overseas for supplies of wool. The wool received at New Plymouth at present was not available for that purpose, although instructions had been received that made-up garments were not to be sent to Wellington until further notice, but were to be available for local requirements, according to a recommendation of the military authorities. Mr. E. R. C. Gilmour said considerable supplies were held by various committees, and it was'ridiculous that men who required comforts in the middle of winter should not have been able to receive them.
