INCREASED RATE
WAIAPU COUNTY COUNCIL HIGHER HOSPITAL LEVY An increase of more than £7OOO in the rate for the current financial, year was decided on by the Waiapu County Council at its last meeting. The council budgeted for a expenditure of £49,579, compared with £47.318 last year, but fo'urtd that it had to levy £30,055 in rates, against £22,029 a year ago. After full consideration, the council agreed that there was no alternative but to recommend to the July meeting that a rate of 3d in the £ on the capital value should be levied for the year. Last year’s rate was 2gd. Facts contributing to the increase included.a higher hospital levy, which rose from £3037 last year to £5628 this year, this increase being equivalent to a rate of 3-16 din the '£, Another factor was the ahsdrption of last year’s credit balance of £3890, whereas the credit balance at the beginning of this year was only £704, while there was also the possibility of a reduction in the county apportionment from the heavy traffic fees pool. Increased cost of wages and material were also causes. It was explained to the council that hist year the council budgeted for a deficit of £3IOO, but due to expenditure on subsidised works being less than that provided for, and the increased collection of rates, the deficit was converted into a credit balance of £704.
