POPULAR HORSEMAN
LATE R. W. MCTAVISH By the passing of Roderick McTavish, the racing community of the Dominion has lost a notable memoer whose sterling personality will be as freshly remembered as his untimely end has been deeply deplored. Forthright in speech and decisive in action, the late Mr. McTavish enjoyed the confidence of owners and trainers, who could rely upon a keen and correct appreciation of a horse’s capabilities as well as upon his own ability in the saddle. Among his fellowhorsemen, he enjoyed a unique popularity and he was president of the New Zealand Jockeys’ Association at the time of his death. Throughout the 23 years he had been before the public, he displayed all the attributes which brought him affectionate regard and which made him a leader of his profession. These qualities of integrity, ability, dash and sound judgment would have brought him to the front in any other walk of life.
