VOICE FOR HITLER
AGED VICHY CHIEF FREE FRENCH CENSURE REGIME OF SERVITUDE (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Prose Assn.) (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 2.20 p.m. RUGBY, Aug. 13. Commenting on Marshal Petain’s broadcast speech of yesterday, Free French headquarters in London considers it constituted the most severe indictment so far brought against the armistice Government and a striking tribute to the French people's determination to resist. It shed, they say, a tragic light on the ever-widening breach separating the Vichy Government from the nation and is a confession of complete failure. Marshal Petain had explicitly recognised that the policy of his Government was a challenge to the feelings of the nation, and the opposition was steadily increasing among all classes of the population. He voiced his determination to overcome this opposition by every means in his power. The goal was clearly indicated. It was to oblige France to take part, in spite of herself, in the “new order”; that was to say, to accept for ever the regime of misery and servitude to which she had been subjected since the capitulation to Germany. Free French headquarters add: “But the eyes of the French people ( have been opened. They know that henceforward it is Hitler' who speaks through the lips of the aged marshal.”
