AMERICAN REACTION
MORE VIGOROUS POLICY OIL BAN SUGGESTED (Reed. Aug. 14. 3 p.m.) WASHINGTON. Aug. 13. The United States is likely to adopt a new and more vigorous policy towards Vichy as a result of Marshal Petain’s broadcast speech of yesterday, the first step of which would be to cut off oil from the Vichy North African colonies. The New Yoi-k Herald-Tribune says: “If Admiral Darlan 'has not actually handed Dakar, Casablanca and Bizerta and the surviving ships of the French Navy over to the Germans, one can feel safe in assuming that he may do so at any moment.” The Rome correspondent of the Swiss paper Tribune de Geneve says that France’s re-entry into the war on the side of the Axis is regarded as almost inevitable. In London, the very oppressive measures announced by Marshal Petain are deemed a clear demonstration of unrest in France, doubtlessly stimulated by the V for victory campaign, which has become so widespread that the Government structure is endangered. Marshal Petain’s 12-point programme provides clear evidence of the rottenness of the internal Vichy structure, which he is combating with Nazi methods.
