PATROL OVER OCEANS

U.S.-BUILT FLYING-BOATS VIGILANCE IN FAST EAST (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 11 a.m. RUGBY, Aug. 14. American-built Catalina flying-boats, which have been arriving across the Pacific from the United States in a steady flow in the past few months, now patrol the huge ocean area from the China Seas to near Africa and from the Arabian Sea to well south of the Equator, states an Air Ministry bulletin. ~ Operating from bases in Malaya and Ceylon, these aircraft, since their arrival in the Far East, have flown on patrol a distance equivalent to six times round the world. Their task is to keep a ceaseless watch for enemy raiders and submarines, and there is already evidence of their efficiency in this theatre of war. The Catalinas may well be called on to escort convoys and act as longrange bombers, undertake routine patrol and do anti-submarine reconnaissance.
