CHECK TO INFLATION
REQUEST BY ROOSEVELT CONTROL OF PRICES (Rccd. Aug. 1, 9 a.m.' WASHINGTON, July 31. President Roosevelt yesterday sent a message to Congress giving a warning that America’s defence effort was being jeopardised by the threat of inflation. He asked for legislation enacting price and rent control and also called for the establishment of reasonable wage limits by co-operation of the labour industry, but he did not ask for legislation to that end. Mr. Roosevelt recommended that price-limiting authority be flexible and subject to license or regulation under expeditious and workable administrative procedures. In addition, Mr. Roosevelt asked for legislative authority for the purchase of materials and commodities when necessary to assure price stability.
