DASH FOR BLACK SEA
TWO ITALIAN TANKERS AXIS NEED OF OIL (Reed. Aug. 1, 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, July 31. After running the Mediterranean blockade, two Italian tankers, the Alvaro and Mayo, arrived in the Bosphorus, after which they immediately sailed for Varna under a German air escort. The Daily Telegraph’s Istanbul correspondent says that the risks taken by these ships recall the failure of a similar attempt last month, when a British submarine smashed an Italian convoy and the Strombo took refuge in Istanbul. These facts suggest that the Axis oil stocks are being drained desperately low and must be increased at whatever risk. The fact that the Alvaro and Mayo are proceeding to Varna instead of Constanza is believed to corroborate the Russian statement that Constanza harbour is utterly unusable and also that the Ploesti oilfields have been wrecked and Rumanian communications seriously dislocated.
