THE HOME GUARD
HEADQUARTERS' VISIT PARADE IN FRASERTOWN COMMANDERS CONFER (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. • Members of the headquarters staff of the Wairoa Battalion of the Home Guard, including Major J. O. Scott and the adjutant, Mr. F. H. Carnie, visited Frasertown on Sunday, when 42 out of the 63 men enrolled in the Frasertown unit of the Guard were on parade at the Recreation Grounds. The parade was commanded by Mr. P. J. O’Kane, 0.C., of the unit, and physical instruction was given by Mr. H. Le Bas, Government physical welfare officer, Gisborne. Mr. D. B. Robertson, Government traffic inspector, selected six men to act as traffic police and instructed them in their duties. Mr. E. Thompson, of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, gave a lecture on first aid, and Mr. G. Souden took the parade for drill. The headquarters staff was very favourably impressed with, the unit’s smartness of appearance and work generally. At the conclusion of the parade Major Scott gave a short address, emphasising the need for discipline and the value of complete loyalty to the officers.
All unit commanders met on Sunday afternoon in the Wairoa Borough Council chambers to discuss various aspects of the Home Guard movement and the programme which has been laid down by the authorities.
On Anzac Day there will be a full parade of Guardsmen. This will give the public an opportunity of seeing the progress that has been made during the comparatively short time the Guard has been functioning.
