LABOUR SURPLUS

SHORTAGE OF MATERIALS PROBLEM IN INDUSTRY Explaining the reason for his visit tq Westport to get particulars of absolutely necessary works to be carried out by the Public Works Department, the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, said at a civic dinner that, although many men had been taken out of industry because of the war, the shortage of material made it difficult to use even some of the men still available. Hence the position in regard to various districts’ requirements had to be assessed in the most reasonable manner possible. Mr. Armstrong admitted that the surface of the Dominion had only been scratched so far as large public works undertakings .were concerned, but said the Government had done the best possible in the past five years to push ahead its progressive policy.
