WAIROA TENNIS CLUB ANNUAL MEETING HELD SEASON OPENS SATURDAY (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. “I wish to draw the members’ attention to the fact that for the first time for many years we have been successful in being able to show a credit balance, however small,” stated the president of the Wairoa Tennis Club, Dr. E. B. Jardine, in his report which was presented at the annual meeting of the club on Monday evening. - The president stated that last year, while finding the necessity of slightly increasing the subscription to cover the rising costs and at the same time finding several of the members marching off in defence of the country, the club was still able to maintain, a strong membership. Despite rising costs in wages and materials, the club could show an excess of income over expenditure of £l4 16s, after writing off depreciation of £2O 5s lOd .as against the loss of £39 3s Id the previous season. The club, at the same time, succeeded in reducing the overdraft by £3l 18s. leaving a balance of £4O 12s 4dElection of Officers The election of officers resulted:— Patron, Mr. H. L. Ilarker; president. Dr. E. B. .Tardine; vice-presidents. Messrs. W. Petchell and P. ThorneGeorge; club captain, Mr. R. M. McDonald; auditor, Mr. J. J. Millar; committee, Mesdames W. Petchell and A. Young, Messrs. W. Reynolds, W. Crarer, L. W. Frude and E. Halstead. The official opening of the club’s 1940-41 season will take place next Saturday, the games to be arranged by the club captain. It was decided to hold a tournament on Labour Day. The subscriptions for the season were fixed at the same rate as last year, namely men £2 12s 6d, ladies £2 2s, juniors £1 Is, and schooL children 10s 6d. In order to foster the game among school children, a recommendation was passed for consideration by the committee that members devote one afternoon each week to coaching the younger players.
