HOME DEFENCE UNITS
CLASSIFYING VETERANS The medical examination of veterans available for home-defence duties in the National Military Reserve was continued to-day, and up to midday there were about 90 men of the 150 required in sight. The proportion of returned soldiers who have submitted themselves for examination, and have succeeded in satisfying the medical officers as to their good health and physical fitness, is surprisingly large. Only a handful of those examined yesterday, last night, and this morning were classified as unfit for home service, and a large number were classified as capable of undertaking overseas service, so far as their physical condition was concerned. With most of these Class I men, age or family responsibilities are present barriers to service with the Second New Zealand Expeditionary' Force, but many ol’ them are looking forward to opportunities of further service abroad later.
