CALL TO PRAYER
AUSTRALIAN RESPONSE CHURCHES CROWDED (Eluc. Tol. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed May 27, 10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, May 26. Answering the King’s call to prayer thousands of people flocked to the churches to-day. Hundreds were unable to gain admittance to St. Paul’s and St. Patrick’s Cathedrals, at which the doors had to be locked. Other city and • suburban churches were over-crowded. Some churches had insufficient hymn and prayer books. It was necessary to convey to many churches extra seats from Sunday schools and public halls. For the evening services ministers had typed copies of hymns for distribution. Archbishop Head said that the response showed that the people recognised the gravity of the situation, but in their hearts believed in the grace of God and went to Him for solace and guidance in their time of trouble. A Sydney message says that pursuant to His Majesty’s request the day of national prayer was observed in New South Wales to-day. Special services were held at all churches, which were crowded, often to over* flowing.
