PRAYER FOR PEACE
DAY OF INTERCESSION CHURCHES CO-OPERATE LARGE CONGREGATIONS Prayers for Divine help in the hour of the nation’s grave peril, and for peace with honour, were offered in all churches throughout Gisborne yesterday, large congregations filling the various churches, and special sermons being preached upon texts appropriate to the occasion. The keynote of most of the sermons was the need for humility and an overhaul of the spiritual outlook of the nation, as a preparation for the approach to God Almighty. It was emphasised from almost every pulpit that pride and jealousy and hatred •were not compatible with prayers for aid from the Throne of God; and that the people now facing a tyranny beyond conception were not exempt from some sjjare of responsibility for re/ent international developments. The Gisborne territorial infantry units and the South African Veterans’ Association held their annual church parades yesterday, the W.E.C.M.R. Band also being in attendance. Canon A. F. Hall preached a special sermon at Holy Trinity Church in connection with the parade.
