NEWS OF THE DAY

Fitness Warrant for Trailer “It is not generally known that a trailer is required to have a warrant of fitness,” said a traffic inspector in the Hamilton Police Court. The owner of a car and trailer was prosecuted on this count, and also for not having his car equipped with a mirror giving him vision beyond the trailer. The motorist was convicted on both counts and was ordered to pay costs. The case was the first of its kind heard in Hamilton.

Hangaroa Rainfall In just over five weeks, more than lOin of rain has fallen at Hangaroa, according to recordings made by Mr. R. C. Parker. During April there were 21 wet days, the rainfall totalling 6.34 in, compared with 3.39 in in April last year. The biggest April fall was in 1!)33, when the figure was 12.63 in. Up to yesterday morning, the rainfall this month totalled 3.87 in on five days, and of that quantity l.SOin fell during the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. yesterday. Patriotic Efforts Up to the present it has been necessary for persons or organisations holding functions under the joint St. John and Red Cross appeal for funds to secure permission from the Patriotic Board. Advice has been received by the secretary in Gisborne. Mr. .1. J. Macdonald, that it will be sufficient for the local chairman or secretary to provide written authority for the holding of functions in the name of the appeal. The local chairman is Mr. H. H. De Costa. Tiniroto Road Open The Gisborne-Wairoa State highway, via Tiniroto, is open to all traffic. The slip near the Hangaroa Bluffs has been cleared, but it is learned that there are some greasy patches of surface on the four miles between the Hangaroa turn-off and the creek near the homestead of Mr. L. Grey. With reasonable care motorists should not find any difficulty in negotiating that portion of the route. A slip overnight blocked the Tahunga road on Waterfall Hill, but it was expected to have the route open by midday. Minor Flooding in Wairoa District Minor flooding in many of the lowlying parts of the Wairoa district has been caused by the heavy rain experienced during the week. The present spell of wet weather is the longest Wairoa has had for some time, the total rainfall for the week so far being 4.63 in. There was also a fair amount of rain in the back country with the result that the river yesterday was running at a higher level than had been the case for some lime. Overnight a large volume of water came down, the river yesterday morning being 7ft higher than if was on Thirsday.—Special.
