CALL FOR FUNDS

WELFARE. OF FORCES LORD GALWAY’S PLEA NO POLITICAL MOTIVES NATIONAL BOARD (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, .this day. At a meeting of the Wellington Patriotic Council yesterday the Gov-ernor-General, Viscount Galway emphasised the necessity of everyone playing a part by providing funds for the welfare of the country's armed forces and also by assisting the Allies in other directions. He said that first he wanted to dissipate any idea that might be lurking in the minds of some that the board was political or that there were political motives behind it. There was nothing political whatever about the National Patriotic Fund Board. If there had been, he would not be chairman of it. Any money given for patriotic purposes would be used for patriotic purposes and. after the war, if there was any in the fund and he hoped mere would be a lot, it would be devoted to the relief of suffering of ex-servicemen. The money could also be earmarked for special purposes. Accounts are being carefully kept and the board knew where all the money went. The reason why it was being paid into a central board was mainly for the purposes of book-keeping. Despatch Overseas

In regard to .sending money overseas, Lord Galway said arrangements had been made by the Government with the Reserve Bank to facilitate transfers that, in the board’s opinion, were required for recreation huts, camp comforts and other amenities for the troops in the field. Lord Galway also pointed out that the appointment of the board was a means to eliminate wastage and overlapping and to spread the burden which undoubtedly should fall on all as equitably as possible. The board was also controlling the question of national appeals so that they were launched in proper sequence for particular purposes and not too quickly one after anothed.

Lord Galway said we were all in the war effort Together, ourselves and the Allies, and we had got to do the utmost to see things through. The more strength we put into it. the quicker it would be over. He therefore confidently appealed: "Do your utmost to see that the raising of funds requisite for national purposes, is carried into effect.”
