EUROPEAN TROOPS
RETURN TO TRENTHAM EARLY MORNING CROWD OVER 1000 AT FUNCTION When the 90 men of the Second Echelon left Gisborne at 2 a.m. to-day for Trenlham camp there was a crowd of over 1000 in Peel street to see the cars move off on the first lap of the journey to Wairoa. The function was an informal one at which there were no speeches. The troops had been included in the function yesterday afternoon when the Maoris left on their return south. The gathering early this morning included representatives of local bodies and of the East Coast Provincial Patriotic Council, as well as relatives and friends of the departing men. Peel street was crowded and the gathering was considered to be exceptionally large in view of the function the previous afternoon and the early hour of departure of the six vehicles taking the men south. There were be a similar function at 2 a.m. to-morrow, when a special car will leave Lowe street with 15 ’men returning to Burnham camp.
