CROQUET CLOSE FINISH TO SINGLES MATCH THIS MORNING

| Play was continued in the West ■ Coast Croquet Association’s annual tournament at the Makura green this morning, when some closely contested matches were seen. The finish of a second life, second round match in the championship singles between Mrs E. Fair (Westport) and Mrs H. Hooper (Greymouth) provided a minor sensation. Mrs Fair had both balls on the peg and Mrs Hooper both on the rover 1 hoop. Mrs Hooper played and made the rover hoop but in attempting to peg onto Mrs Fair’s ball, moved it on as well, leaving both players with one ball each. After several shots had been played Mrs Fair managed to peg her other ball on, to win* 26-24. Another close match was between Mrs H. Prescott (Greymouth) and Mrs A. H. Greener (Westport), both of whom played good croquet and made some excellent breaks. Mrs Greener won, 26-24. Results this morning were:— Championship singles.—First Life, Second Round: Mrs Slee (Westport) defeated Mrs Cooper (Christchurch), 26-9. Third Round. Mrs Greener (Westport) defeated Mrs Prescott (Greymouth), 26-24. Second Life, Second Round: Mrs Fair (Westport) defeated Mrs Hooper (Greymouth), 26-24. Handicap Doubles.—Second Round: Mrs Robertson 4 and Mrs McHerron 21 defeated Mrs Ramage 8 and Mrs Keating 6, 26-16. Matches completed yesterday after the Evening Star went to press were as follows:— Championship Singles.—First Life, Second Round: Mrs Patterson (Runanga) beat Mrs Gandfle (Christchurch), 26-13; Mrs Hooper (Grey-1 mouth) beat Mrs Owen (Christchurch), 26-3; Mrs Fair (Westport) beat Mrs Mercer (Greymouth), 26-16. Third Round: Mrs Hooper beat Mrs Patterson, 26-5. Second Life, Second Round: Mrs Mercer beat Miss McKnight, 26-13. Handicap Doubles. — Mesdames Ramage (Cobden, 8) and Keating j (Greymouth, 6) beat Mesdames Sleei (Westport, 31) and Greener (West-! port, 3|), 26-11.
