MINISTER REFUSES INDEPENDENT REVIEW OF BREAD PRICES

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day (P.A.). The Minister of Industries and Commerce, Mr Nordmeyer, has rejected a proposal by the New Zealand Federation of Master Bakers and Pastrycooks that three practising accountants should review bread prices and that their decision on relief to be given the baking industry should be accepted as conclusive by both the Government and the Federation. A special general meeting of the baking industry has been called for December 7 at Wellington to consider the Minister’s reply. The letter from the Minister, in reply to the bakers’ representations, was received by the secretary of the federation, Mr G. R. Burrowes, in Christchurch yesterday, and stated: “In view of the fact that the bakers’ case was heard before a public sitting of the Price Tribunal, I regret that it is not possible to accede to the request. If there is any fresh evidence which would justify a rehearing, I would willingly ask the tribunal to reconsider the matter. In the meantime the decision must stand. “We are disappointed that Mr Nordmeyer has not met the request,” said Mr Burrowes. “The trade will not accept the position as it is.”
